Mr. Thing 1990 Mix
This is a mix of all 1990 hip hop from DJ Mr. Thing formerly of the Scratch Perverts. Not sure where I got this, but this was part of the 'Thing Thursday' mixes he does on maybe a radio/podcast show in the UK. This one gets a lot of play in the gym because of how up-tempo 1990 was. Enjoy

Gee & Jay
Caught this obscure 12" in the collection I picked up recently. This is the one and only record from the group Gee & Jay called 'X-Rated Lyn' on M.O.B. Records, which according to the Freddy Fresh Rap Records was distributed by B-Boy Records. I love the lo-fi demo quality, the old school sex rap, the randomness. The dude drops one long verse about how he meets some chick, hits its, forgets to pull out, kicks her older brother in the nuts and then bounces. Seems like everyone was killing Grace Jones' 'My Jamaican Guy' in 1988 (2 Much, Kid N Play), way before LL used it for 'Doin it.' The B-Side on this 12" isn't that bad either.

Big Daddy Kane, Sir Ibu and Kings of Swing freestyle
This is pretty rare material here, a freestyle session featuring Big Daddy Kane, Sir Ibu (of the Divine Force), and the Kings of Swing (a group featuring Suga K, Mike Master and DJ Cocoa Chanelle). They all go verse for verse while DJ Kevvy Kev is cutting up the instrumental for Ultramagnetic MC's 'Give the Drummer Some' and Marley Marl calls the shots. Not sure what radio show this was originally from, I pulled this off a Stretch Armstrong Show. Bobbito thanks Madame Superior, a long time WKCR listener, for sending the freestyle to play over the air.

Halftime Show (12-9-1998) featuring Prince Paul

Prince Paul makes a visit to WNYU's Halftime Show to promote his 'Prince Among Thieves' LP. This was an old school (late 80's, early 90's) show they did on December 9, 1998. DJ Riz and DJ Eclipse play the first half, and Prince Paul jumps on the wheels for the second half.

Coke La Rock & RC La Rock
I think a good majority of DJ's or turntablists are aware of (and correct me if I'm wrong) Cool Herc being the pioneer of hip hop and hip hop DJ'ing circa 1973, and Grand Wizard Theodore inventing the scratch, but what about the first MC? Who was the first?
Apparently, the answer to that is Coke La Rock, down with Cool Herc. For more insight into the history, check the youtube video below for words from the man himself.

Speaking of La Rock's, I had a beat up original copy of RC La Rock's record under the name Radiance called 'Micstro', which is amazing. It's got a disco/party vibe and a really good energy. RC La Rock kills it with no hook for like 5 minutes until a bridge comes in. The Ego Trip compilations featured this one on singles from 1982, and then a reissue was going around, seen here. If you've never heard this I urge you to check it out.
Radiance - Micstro
Despite some of my posts here where I might sound like I know what I'm talking about, I'm not really going to pretend like I know anything about hip hop or the history of hip hop. The truth is, as a young kid grabbing my older brother's cassettes back in the late 1980's, listening to albums like Rasin' Hell, Liscence to Ill, Paid In Full, etc., I wasn't even 10 years old, and we're talking about some fifteen odd years of hip hop being around. I don't really mind the era I grew up in but I completely missed a lot of good hip hop years and a lot of good records like this one I'll probably never know about. Anyone who actually remembered this song when it came out or knows more about Coke La Rock or RC LA Rock I'd love to hear about it..

Halftime Big Playback

This is a treat for all you fans of the older (80's and early 90's) hip hop. The Halftime Show used to do Ego Trip nights dedicated to the older stuff, and this might be the second or third installment of those shows. You get a nice blend of old school gems along with a little history lesson in the mix.
You'll hear a good 60 minutes from DJ Riz and DJ Eclipse with special guests including the writers of the 'Ego Trip's Big Book of Rap Lists', promoting the book which just came out in stores (a really good book). Also in the studio they had MC Mitch-ski who put out 'Brooklyn Blew up the Bridge' a record dissing MC Shan and Marley Marl during the KRS-One Vs MC Shan battle that was going on back then. During their live interview Mitch-Ski explains how the record came about and follows with a freestyle. Enjoy...

Evil Dee is on the mix...

Here is another mix from DJ Evil Dee live on WKCR's 'Lord Sear Special' circa 2002. He plays some live old school performances, first Run DMC's 'Here we go', then a Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 live early 80's show. Flash is killing the breaks. Good Times, Love Thang, Funky music is the thing, etc. You'll also hear a live performance from Busy Bee.

Old School
Here goes 3 random old school hip hop records from the crates. All 3 are pretty rare and slept on.
This one is a promo only remix for EPMD's 'Get off the Bandwagon' from their debut LP 'Strictly Business'. I like this remix just as much, if not more, than the original version. In the beginning of the song PMD shouts out a gang of MC's who were 'getting busy' back in 1989. The beat is different, a little slower, but the lyrics are pretty much the same.

This one is Loose J and the Master of Wax doing 'The Hi Lo Cut' on Ragin' records. This is back when hip hop was fun, when a group could dedicate an entire track to getting a haircut. No year on the wax but I'm guessing late 80's.

This is Sir Ibu's 1989 solo joint 'The Peacemaker'. It's a dope track with a positive message about unity between different races. Slept on classic hip hop. Get it while you can.
