NY Live 89.1 December 1996 (demos & freestyles)

This is another pause edit special with strictly demos and freestyles. New York Live WNYU 89.1 during December of 1996. The first half of the show had some unreleased demos from Last Emporer, Nas, and Natural Elements, I'm pretty sure that was Cien Smooth and TO Sweet subbing in for Mayhem and Sunset. Then the tape had a freestyle session with Eddie Brock and L Fudge, then Half A Mill, then Choclair, then AK Skills. I'm guessing this must have the highlights from  2 or 3 different  shows.

New York Live 4-24-1996

Shout to DJ Eclipse for posting this on his mixcloud. It's more portions from the New York Live show that featured DJ Muro's break set. Big Noyd, Ty Nitty, DJ Spinna and the Jigmastas were also in the studio that night. I guess I must have mislabeled the date on my tape, mine said the 18th and his has the 24th. Most likely Eclipse's date is accurate. I used to take clips from the Wednesday and Thursday shows, sometimes two consecutive weeks on the same tape, and get confused when labeling.

Here's Muro's break set in full

Re-Up New York Live WNYU 1996 (w/Choclair)

Martin Moore and DJ Mayhem on WNYU 89.1 with special guest Choclair, who drops a quick two verses over Jay-Z's 'Dead Presidents' instrumental. Peace to Talib for the rip.

Re-Up: Half a Mill Freestyles

One MC who shows up on a lot of my old WYNU tapes is Half A Mill. I ripped a few of his freestyles from 1996 through 1999. There is one of them (Oct 96) where he rhymes for nearly 10 minutes without stopping. R.I.P. Half a Mill, one of BK's finest.

Re-Up: New York Live August 1996

This is the A side to one of my old New York Live tapes (8-28-96) The tape  jumps around a little bit, but you get a good 30 minutes of DJ Riz in the mix and a freestyle session with Xzibit and Phil Da Agony.

New York Live 3-12-1997

DJ Eclipse has been killing it with the radio rips. This New York Live show is one of the last few broadcasted and features a Half a Mill freestyle and interview. Make sure to follow Eclipse's mixcloud if you haven't already.

R.I.P. Pumpkinhead

I really dug PH's flows. I never met him, and narrowly missed DJing an event in New Brunswick where he performed. But, I remember seeing him perform somewhere and asking the crowd if they knew where he got his name from (his mom). As you've probably heard from the outpouring of tributes, he was a staple on the indie circuit and a genuinely good person. Unfortunately, as time goes by, we do way too many of these RIP posts. The following is a clip from a New York Live show on WNYU from April of 1996 featuring Pumpkinhead off the top. R.I.P. You will be missed.

New York Live May 1996 (Das Efx, Natural Elements)

Dug up this dusty, 89.1 WNYU, New York Live Show from sometime around April/May of 1996.

DJ Mayhem, A-Butta and L-Swift were fresh back from their trip to London, recording joints with the Creators as 2-Face. The rip starts off with Mayhem debuting an unmixed version of 'Hey, Hey, Hey' and then flows into a freestyle session with diggy Das Efx promoting 'Hold it Down.'

They close it out with a long freestyle session featuring A-Butta, L-Swift, AL Skills, and Quiz. This was Natural Elements off the top, at their best, flowing off the last word in each other's lines.

New York Live 1995

This one's a pause edit special, a 30 minute side from a dusty old New York Live tape. DJ Riz and DJ Mayhem on 89.1 WNYU with a bunch of guest MC's. First up was Big Daddy Kane, next was Mad Lion, and it ends off with Mic Geronimo. This might be a combination of different shows from around October - November of '95. Kane kills it on here.

Re-Up - New York Live WNYU 1996 (w/Lord Finesse & Onyx)

This tape is pretty crazy, came to me via Talib. Lord Finesse shows you why he's the total package in hip hop as a DJ, producer and MC. Finesse jumps on the wheels for DJ Mayhem's New York Live on 89.1, on what is most likely one of their Thursday shows. After a 45 minute DJ set, Finesse plays some unreleased beats for a freestyle. Onyx was also in the studio promoting their new material.

Natural Elements on WNYU

Peace to DJ Eclipse for coming through with the ill Natural Elements tribute show 2 weeks back. The links haven't made their away around yet, but you can check most of the show on the U-Stream, and see freestyles and interviews with most of the group in the studio.

It's incredible how much material these guys made that never was released on vinyl. During the mid 90's the Natural Elements were really productive. According to Charlemagne, the groups producer, most of that material (masters and such) no longer exists, which is a shame. Part of the magic with these guys was the raw creativity in their demos, freestyles, etc.

Here goes some Natural Elements stuff from the Dirty Waters archives..

Re-Up: New York Live 1996 (X-men, Pete Rock, INI)

This is classic New York Live show with Mayhem, Sunset and DJ Riz, doing their thing making you swing and all that. The show was on WNYU 89.1 from around 1993-1997. This one features guests the X-Men (Roc Raida (RIP), Rob Swift, and Mr Sinista), along with some freestyles from Pete Rock and INI. I put clips of this tape in some older posts, but here is the full (pause edited) 60 minutes from what I have from this night. Enjoy!

This is a classic New York Live show with DJ Mayhem, Sunset, DJ Riz, and special guest MC's A-Butta and Supernatural. 30 minute clip with most of it freestyles. Peace to Silano on this one.

DJ Mayhem beat

I have this instrumental on a few of my WNYU, New York Live tapes. I'm pretty sure this is DJ Mayhem's production, but not positive. I also don't know if this had a track made with an MC on it, was released, or just an instrumental played on the show. They played it during the talk breaks consistently for a few months. If anyone has a clue, feel free to inform. Nice laid back piano groove on this one..
